This post is written in English because it is intended for English learners. Even a single letter of Korean is totally useless for learning English. Thus I decided to write the post in English only.

There are four questions in the speaking section, each having different characteristics.

I will provide some tips for each question.

Refer to Sample Questions and Answers also.

Speak as QUICKLY as possible.

1. Personal opinion

introduction + 1,2 reason.

One long reason is okay

  • Main Point (pick one, 8 seconds)

    “I agree with the idea that…”

    “I think it is better to…”

    “I think it is a great/terrible idea to…”

  • Transition (optional)

    “I feel this way for several reasons.”

  • First Reason (25 seconds)

    “First…” + “For example…” (and a personal example)

  • Second Reason (12 seconds)

    “Second…” + “To be more specific…” (and a few more details)

2. Campus Announcement

First, an article is given related to some chagnge in the campus. Then, a conversation between two students is given. One of them supports or opposes the change. He/she will give two reasons for his/her opinion. The reasons will correspond those of the article.

Spend 15 seconds summarizing the reading, and 15 seconds summarizing the conversation.

Spends 10-15 seconds talking about the reading and 30 seconds talking about the conversation.

    “According to the announcement/article/letter…”

  • Reasons from Reading (6 seconds)

    “This is because __ and __.”

  • Transition (2 seconds)

    “There are two reasons why the man supports/opposes this change.”

    “The man has a mixed opinion of this change.” (only for mixed-opinion conversations)

    “The man/woman opposes this.”

    “The man/woman supports this.”

    “The man/woman has a mixed opinion of this.”

  • First Reason (23 seconds)

    “First of all(To begin with), he argues that…”

  • Second Reason (23 seconds)

    “Moreover, he mentions that…”

3. General to Specific

A short article about an acodemic term or concept is given first. Then a lecture is given. The lecture will give one or two examples to explain the term or concept.

You have to summarize the reading and article.

Spend about 10 seconds summarizing the reading, and 20 seconds summarizing the lecture.

Don’t ignore the reading.

Do note taking.

  • Stating the Term or Idea (15 seconds)

    “The reading is about (TERM/CONCEPT)”

  • Give a Small Amount of Detail from the Reading

    “It states that…”

  • Transition (5 seconds)

    “The professor elaborates on this by providing an example.”

    “The professor elaborates on this by providing two examples.”

  • First Example/First Part (20 seconds)

    “To begin with, he/she mentions that…”

  • Second Example/Second Part (20 seconds)

    “Next, he/she says that…”

4. Academic Lecture

An audio lecture on an academic topic is given. The lecture usually describes how something is done. It will illustrate this concept using tangible examples.

You need to summarize the contents of the lecture.

Start by quickly introducing the topic and then spend almost all your time describing the examples.

  • Stating the Lecture Subject and detail (10 seconds)

    “The lecturer explains SUBJECT/TERM by giving two examples/an example.”

  • First Example/First Part (3-5 sentences) (25 seconds)

    “First, she/he describes…”

  • Second Example/Second part (3-5 sentences) (25 seconds)

    “Second, she mentions…”

  • Give a Short Conclusion (Not necessary)

    “These examples (this example) demonstrate…”
